The definition of Smart phone is not clear.The smart phone integrated the PDA as the small PC with a cell phone.The smart phone began in the late 1990s and developed in the early 2000s.
However,the cell phone was originally devloped in Japan,so the spread of smart phone in Japan was later than other countries.

It is Symbian and BlackBerry to have had initiative at this time. However, a many functions cell phone did original development in Japan, and the interest in smart phone was low.

Nokia 9000 Communicator(1996) It is the first smart phone.Nokia is the maker of a cell phone and had sales most in those days.
Symbian is the OS by Symbian campany.This company was purchased by Nokia.

Google purchased android company and showed smartphone OS "Android" as open-source software. Most of libraries are available as well as a kernel free, and the modification is free, too. Standard group OHA(Open Handset Alliance) where a large number of carriers and makers including Google participated in manages it.
This is free open-source software. Therefore it is adopted steadily because it is the OS that a user can customize it freely, and is easy to apply to other information appliances including a car navigation system and the electronic book.
Smartphones spread by such a process in Japan. The new history will be born in future.I want to expect the development of the smartphone as a consumer.
